Warehousing Case Study: JD.COM 3PL Warehouse

As the largest retailer in China, JD.COM serves 99% of the country, providing unparalleled same-day and next-day delivery.

With approximately 600 million active customers, JD.COM faces costly, inefficient, and labor-intensive operations, compounded by high turnover rates. Seasonal changes intensify these challenges, necessitating additional recruitment, onboarding, and training. To address these pain points, JD.COM partnered with ForwardX Robotics.

In their first of over 30 collaborative projects, JD.COM deployed 12 Max 600 Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) integrated with their Warehouse Control System (WCS) through ForwardX’s f(x) Fleet Manager. Utilizing handheld devices, pickers efficiently and accurately scan, check, and label goods, significantly enhancing productivity. The implementation of the Max 600 AMRs addressed JD.COM’s operational inefficiencies.

The Results:

  • Deployment & Scalability: A two-week rapid deployment ensured no operational downtime, and a one-week scale-up supported seasonal demand influxes.
  • Units Picked Per Hour (UPH) Increase: JD.COM experienced a 133% UPH increase within the initial seven days.
  • Operational Costs Decrease: The warehouse achieved a 30% reduction in operational costs while fulfilling orders for both B2B store replenishment and B2C eCommerce.

This collaboration highlights the transformative power of ForwardX’s AMR technology in warehouse operations, utilizing innovative end-to-end material handling solutions. The Max 600, part of the Omni-Fleet AMR series, supports various tasks, including piece-picking, case picking, and pallet movement. ForwardX has deployed over 3,000 AMRs in over 220 facilities across 5 continents. With offices in the US, Japan, Korea, and China, along with partnerships around the globe, ForwardX is expanding and applying its proven solutions to empower the workforce of tomorrow.
